DS Facts: Is Down Syndrome Contagious?

No, Down syndrome is not contagious.

Down syndrome is a genetic condition that is caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21.

It is not caused by a virus, bacteria, or other infectious agent, and it cannot be spread from person to person through contact or exposure.

Down syndrome occurs randomly in about 95% of cases, and is not related to anything that the parents did or did not do during pregnancy. (source: CDC)
